A Learning Management System (LMS) is a web-based training and e-learning solution that uses a simple yet perceptive interface, thus everyone, whether familiar with computers or not, can easily create, manage and track interactive training courses and learning programs. The Center for Safety and Environmental Management (CSEM) has been using this system in its website to serve its aim in promoting workplace safety.
CSEM was established in 1992 by a group of professionals with over 30 years of experience in providing safety, health and environmental training and consulting services. In its years of existence, CSEM has established a name for itself in providing industries, corporate and government agencies with high quality safety programs that help in preserving a safe environment for people at work. The need for a learning management system in the center’s website is mainly to reach out to those who do not have the time to attend the important seminars and training sessions offered on a regular basis.
Safety is a major problem at most workplaces, with more than tens of thousands of minor and major injuries taking place due to the workers’ ignorance of basic safety guidelines and regulations. Through the learning management system, CSEM tries to spread the knowledge of its staff and trainers across the United States, and even past the borders to Canada in order that employees benefit from different training and safety courses wherever they are.
With the help of the learning management system, CSEM offers a group of courses that are offered through the web. These courses, which are also known as Webinar Training courses, require only a sound internet connection and a phone line so that the employee can participate in the instructor-led training session. The following courses are available on demand: confined space, trenching and excavation, 8-hour refresher courses, and scaffolding/fall protection classes.
In addition, the learning management system at CSEM has a separate portion for online training courses which can be purchased through the center’s online store to be later watched and learned. Currently, more than 10 courses are available, and they all cover the same topics that are offered in general training sessions provided to different clientele.
However, with the e-learning courses and training sessions aside, the learning management system shows most efficiency in the virtual university that CSEM set up. As part of the training needed to work, the center offers 5 categories for courses that are state-recognized and university accredited – Healthcare education, real estate, OT – environmental, OT – skills, and technical, industrial and safety skills. Each of these has its own OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Administration), DOT (Department of Transportation) and EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) training sessions.
Once a course is selected, registered members can purchase them, whereas new users will have to create a profile in which they will fill their particulars and then provide billing information. The last step is confirmation which comes when the employee had been authenticated to enroll in the online course offered through CSEM’s learning management system.
The necessity behind workers’ wellbeing at work does not stop at providing safety guidelines to conform with industrial safety requirements, but also goes to adding high quality into the productivity process. With the CSEM’s leaning management system, the benefits of safety training are available all the time and can be accessed from any computer to provide ease for different employees.
