In 1992, the Center for Safety and Environmental Management, Inc. (CSEM) was established by a group of professionals who have mastered their skills over the period of 30 years. With their safety, health and environmental training and consulting services, CSEM has been the first choice of many government agencies and industries when training their workers. In addition, CSEM now offers different training sessions online with the help of its website’s LMS.
LMS, or the Learning Management System, is a software application which administers, documents, tracks and reports training programs, classrooms and different training content. CSEM’s LMS is web-based, thus is designed to facilitate access to learning content and are open to regulated industries for conformity training. Plus, CSEM uses its system in offering courses through its virtual university.
Starting off with the basic CSEM website, the LMS comes in handy with the center’s Webinar Training service. Through this, employees can use the phone and internet to participate in an instructor-lead training session that is available on demand and can be attended from any location. Classes available through this service include confined space, trenching and excavation, 8-hour refresher courses, and scaffolding/fall protection classes.
In addition, LMS can be used to manage accounts when purchasing online training courses from the CSEM virtual store. There are 14 courses which are available through the store, and all offer the same requirements needed by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA).
The online courses available through CSEM’s LMS are: 99th Commanders Environmental Overview, Accident Investigation, Arc Flash Safety, Bloodborne Pathogens, Confined Space Entry, Crane Rigging, Defensive Driving for Non-Commercial Motorists, Electrical Safety Unqualified Worker, Emergency Action and Fire Prevention, HazCom Refresher, HAZWOPER Awareness, Lockout/Tagout Authorized Employee, Portable Power Tool Safety, and Scaffolds in Construction.
Aside from its main website, CSEM mainly depends on its LMS in its virtual university website. Through the latter, state-recognized, university-credited Continuing Education Units (CEU’s) for OSHA, EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) and DOT (Department of Transportation) training are offered. Workers across the United States and all the way to Canada can join and benefit from the courses offered.
Registering in CSEM’s virtual university is quite easy. Employees of different sectors should first browse through the course library to view demos and decide which course they will take up. Currently, 5 sections are available through CSEM’s LMS – Healthcare Education, Technical, Industrial and Safety Skills, Real Estate, OT – Environmental and OT – Skills. The following step is to create a profile, which will include each enrolled worker’s particulars as well as the courses taken by him. Finally, billing information is gathered, and once confirmed, a confirmation letter will be sent to the employee.
With the ease and variety of functionality that the internet provides, using it for education and continuous learning can help in spreading valuable information in a faster and more convenient way in comparison with conventional methods. CSEM made the right choice to use the internet to operate its Learning Management System (LMS) so as to alert many workers across North America of the hazards they may face, therefore keep them safe and healthy for years to come.
