In machines and equipment, energy sources such as electrical, mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic, chemical, thermal, or other sources may be dangerous for employees. The unexpected activation or release of stored energy during the service and maintenance of machines and equipment may cause critical injuries or even fatalities to personnel. Measures for regulating various types of hazardous energy are outlined in the OSHA’s General Industry Standard for the Control of Hazardous Energy (Lockout/Tagout) (29 CFR 1910.147). The LOTO standard lays forth the employer’s obligation to shield employees from dangerous energy.
