OSHA requires employers to provide first responder training to employees, who are responsible to take action in case of a hazardous materials spill (29 CFR 1910.120(q)). This training program covers all the topics required by OSHA under 29 CFR 1910.120 as well as procedures for combatting non-emergency spills of hazardous materials.

Goals of the Course

The training program will train participants to assess the dangers of hazardous materials, associated risks in the form of a spill and initiate the appropriate first emergency response.

Learning Outcome:

  • Locate and identify hazardous substances in an emergency situation;
  • Identify hazard labels and Safety Data Sheets (SDS) to communicate hazards in industry and their use;
  • Initiate an emergency response in case of a spill;
  • Define the Incident Command System (ICS) and the significance of an effective response to an emergency release;
  • Differentiate between an emergency and non-emergency spill; and
  • Describe actions to be taken, special materials to be used and techniques to combat non-emergency spills of hazardous materials.
